Joe Hurd is a public and nonprofit board director, technology executive and strategic advisor. In addition to being a trustee of CHM, Joe is an independent director of GoCo Group plc (LSE: GOCO), a UK-based insurance and home services price comparison company (Remuneration and Nomination Committees); on the Board of Trustees of Menlo College, a four-year college located in Silicon Valley (Development Committee); and on the Board of the American Swiss Foundation, based in New York.
As an operating executive, Joe is the Global Managing Director at SOSV, LLC, a $750M early-stage venture fund, where he leads strategy and business development efforts for the fund’s life sciences, deep technology and consumer-facing mobile portfolio companies. He is also a Venture Partner for Good Growth Capital, a female-led venture fund, and advises numerous innovative Silicon Valley-based pre-seed and seed stage startups on go-to-market strategy, revenue models, and international expansion, with a particular emphasis on diverse founders.
Joe built his business career leading strategic business development, strategy and sales teams at Facebook, Gannett, and AOL/TimeWarner and has worked in the US, the UK, Japan, Korea, Australia, South Africa and Southeast Asia. During President Obama’s first term (2009-2012), he served as a senior political appointee in the Commerce Department with an international trade policy portfolio. Currently, he is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations (Membership Committee, Co-Chair of the Diversity Committee), the Trilateral Commission, the American Bar Association, and the National Association of Corporate Directors. He received a JD from Harvard Law School, a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University, and an AB cum laude from Harvard College. Joe lives in Los Altos, CA with his wife, daughter and two sons.
