Douglas Carlston

Douglas Carlston was the founder, CEO and Chairman of Broderbund Software, Inc., an educational software firm, which commenced operation in 1980. In 1998 it was acquired by The Learning Company.

Mr. Carlston has served as PAC Director for MoveOn Political Action Committee, an organization engaged in fostering increased participation in the democratic process by coordinating the efforts of tens of thousands of small donors in support of quality Senate and House candidates. Carlston currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Public Radio International (PRI), The Santa Fe Institute, the Albanian American Enterprise Fund, the American Bank of Albania, and the Long Now Foundation. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of Dominican University of California, the Committee on University Resources of Harvard University, and the Board of Advisors of Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. He received his B.A. from Harvard College in 1970 and his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1975.

He has authored and published five books, from Software People (Simon &Schuster, 1985) to Beginning Swahili (Butu, 1970). He has developed and published software products and also written several journal articles, including, most recently, "Storing Knowledge," in Time & Bits: Managing Digital Continuity," (Getty Conservation Institute, 1998).

He resides in San Rafael, is married to Tomi Pierce and has two children. He enjoys travel, tennis, hiking, skiing and collecting stamps and puzzle boxes.
