Job Summary

The Director of Technology provides technical leadership across existing and new technology resources and is responsible for technology operations and technical implementation of sustainable, scalable solutions. The Director works in partnership with the CIO to develop and implement ongoing strategies and new initiatives. They will translate strategy into a clear, shared vision and establish and implement action plans.

This is a hands-on, hybrid position that oversees three direct reports, manages a variety of vendors, and collaborates with the directors of all departments to provide technology oversight and support their needs. The Director is a trusted and customer-service focused internal consultant for staff at all levels. They advise and recommend technical solutions to complicated problems that enhance efficiency, prioritize the visitor experience, and maintain CHMs position as a trusted resource on the history of technology and computing.

Big-picture goals for the first year include redesigning business application systems architecture and integrations (ticketing, donations, membership, CRM, finance); supporting the migration to a new CMS/DAM system; completing the creation of developer portal APIs for the online collection; supporting last-generation websites that maintain high visitation; and evaluating and updating overall security and data privacy policies.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Working closely with CIO, provide leadership and oversight for technology-based projects. Provide overall direction and advice on the museum’s technology implementations. Work closely with colleagues to meet team goals, improve processes and practices, and ensure technology solutions meet business needs.

Provide accountability and oversight of the museum's internal applications and software systems. This includes ensuring the maintenance and support of these systems and managing the completion of updates and new features. These systems include collections management/digital asset management, CRM (Salesforce), ticketing, fundraising, and business application systems.

Manage implementation and support of all back-end systems, including databases, APIs, web applications, and software system integrations. Document and report progress and updates to stakeholders and CIO.

Partner with the Enterprise Architect to ensure CHM’s IT infrastructure is modern, sustainable, and flexible, with solid disaster recovery and business continuity plans. Plan and ensure implementation of IT infrastructure needs that support internal applications and software systems as well as outward-facing web and onsite interactive applications.

Supervise IT Manager, Systems Engineer, and Technology Support positions. Hold high standards for the team while empowering them to problem-solve proactively and creatively and model versatility and collaboration for the organization. Develop and monitor annual goals and objectives.

Be an enthusiastic and inspirational champion for enhancements to work through appropriate tools, platforms, infrastructure, and support; Ensure staff understand the value of these tools and resources and receive ongoing communication, training, and support to use them effectively in their work.

Provide direction for the organization's data and cybersecurity protection and oversee technology governance, policies, and protocols. Recommend and enforce policies and procedures.

Develop and manage department budget.

Candidate Profile

CHM is seeking candidates who possess a record of professional experience that demonstrates progressive responsibilities and significant technical experience. The ideal candidate will have the following professional and personal qualities, skills, and characteristics:

Bachelor’s degree (BS) in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience. Minimum 10 years’ experience with hands-on application development, specifically in the areas of databases, database-driven APIs, distributed systems, multi-platform integration, and mobile and website development. Minimum 5 years’ experience in software solution architecture. Minimum 5 years’ experience managing teams.

Experience managing, implementing, and supporting technology especially in a museum, tourist destination, entertainment attraction, or public-facing environment.

Must possess a broad base of technical knowledge in information technology, cloud computing platforms, and digital engagement tools.

Exceptional communications and interpersonal skills, especially around change management processes and building understanding, excitement, and buy-in for technical and digital strategies with staff.
Experience providing technical leadership on projects through their entire production life cycle including administrative aspects of technology projects, writing RFPs and SOWs, managing schedules and budgets, and presenting and reporting to stakeholders.

Comfort with and enthusiasm for rethinking existing processes and procedures.
Experience in advising, supervising, and mentoring staff.

Ability to work without direct supervision and to carry out multiple projects simultaneously.

A desire and hands-on ability to work closely with end-users and team members to implement systems, workflows, and resolve problems.

Knowledge of:

  • Microsoft platforms, Office365, SharePoint, Teams, Microsoft Exchange
  • Communications platforms, including Zoom, Slack
  • Collaboration platforms, including Airtable
  • Ticketing/admissions systems
  • CRM/database administration, preferably with Salesforce
  • Windows server and VMWare administration
  • Cisco Meraki network technologies, including switches, routing, firewalls, intrusion detection, and enterprise Wi-Fi.
  • Cloud-based infrastructure platforms, including Microsoft Azure and AWS
  • Website administration including WordPress and Pantheon
  • Business intelligence, data analysis, and reporting tools, e.g., Tableau or Power BI
  • Digital asset management systems, implementation
  • Collections management database software
  • IP Security, access control, and BMS
  • Retail management software

Salary Range: $135,000-145,000 annually
