Look Who's Driving

Film Screening and Panel Discussion

After years of anticipation, autonomous vehicles are now being tested on public roads around the world. Dozens of startups have sprung up alongside established auto and tech giants—which are also testing the waters—to form what many hope will be a transformative new industry. But as innovators rush to cash in on what they see as the next high-tech pot of gold, some experts warn there are still daunting challenges to overcome—like how to train computers to make life-and-death decisions as well as humans can. NOVA peers under the hood of the autonomous vehicle industry to investigate how driverless cars work, how they may change the way we live, and whether we will ever be able to entrust them with our lives. NOVA’s Look Who’s Driving—produced by Menlo Park-based Kikim Media—premieres Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at 9 p.m. ET/8C on PBS.

How can we train artificial intelligence to be better than humans at making life-and-death decisions? How do self-driving cars work? How close are we to large-scale deployment of them? Join us for a special screening of this fascinating documentary followed by our panel of pioneering company leaders and academic experts who will tackle not just these technical issues, but some of the potential economic and social implications. This panel discussion will be streamed live on our Facebook page.

Autonomous Vehicles Exhibit On Display
Last Chance to visit the Autonomous Vehicles Exhibit at CHM! This special screening marks the closing this Fall of our popular exhibit on autonomous vehicles, Where To?. Come early and tour the gallery before the show. Discover how self-driving cars have remained an unfulfilled dream for over 80 years. Meanwhile, other autonomous vehicles have reached interstellar space, explored the oceans, and mastered the air. They even harvest the grain for your breakfast cereal. Are autonomous vehicles finally about to hit the road for the rest of us? If so, how will they transform cities, privacy, and work? See a live demo of Lidar, the “eyes” of driverless cars, and take a selfie in a Waymo custom car! You may also enjoy this online version of the exhibit content.
