Associate Director of the UC Davis Wildlife Health Center, Dr. Gilardi leads core programs of the Center, including its Gorilla Doctors program, which provides life-saving veterinary care to ill and injured gorillas in the wild in Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Gilardi also serves as a Team Lead for the USAID Emerging Pandemic Threats PREDICT project in Rwanda and Uganda, which is working at high-risk human-wildlife interfaces to detect emerging pathogens that could infect people. She has published dozens of scientific papers on wildlife health, on topics ranging from pathogens in wild birds, including H5N1 avian influenza, to human viral pathogens in wild gorillas.
