David A. Hodges is Daniel M. Tellep Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of California at Berkeley, where he has been a member of the faculty since 1970. He served as Dean of Berkeley’s College of Engineering from 1990 to 1996, and retired from regular service in 1998. He held research and management positions at Bell Laboratories from 1966 to 1970. He was a co-recipient of the 1983 IEEE Morris N. Liebmann Technical Field Award and was the 1997 recipient of the IEEE Education Medal. He is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering and has served in the past as a corporate Director for Megatest, Mentor Graphics, and Silicon Image.
While at Bell Labs, Hodges participated in the mid-1960s prototype development of an 8kbit MOS SRAM for telephone system applications. He forecast the subsequent development of much larger MOS memories. In the 1970s, with students and colleagues at Berkeley, he was involved in development and demonstration of early MOS data converters and switched-capacitor filters for the per-channel voice to PCM interface of digital telephony. Mixed-signal CMOS circuits today are essential elements in mobile telephones and many other products.
