John Mashey is a consultant and techviser. After several years advising venture capitalists and startups, he started studying climate science and denialism and has been an advisor for UC San Francisco’s Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education. Mashey was a founder of the SPEC benchmarking group, an ACM National Lecturer for four years, guest editor for IEEE Micro, and an organizer of Hot Chips conferences. At Silicon Graphics from 1992 to 2000, he introduced the phrase “big data” and became VP/Chief Scientist. Previously, in 1985 he joined MIPS Computer Systems, where he managed operating systems development and helped design the MIPS RISC architecture, specific CPUs, systems, and software. He moved to Silicon Valley in 1983 to join Convergent Technologies as director of software. Prior to that, he worked on UNIX at Bell Labs.
