Bob Metcalfe is the coinventor of Ethernet, a research affiliate at MIT’s Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), and Emeritus Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. After developing the Ethernet local-area network (LAN) in collaboration with David Boggs at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), Metcalfe founded 3Com in 1979. During the 1990s, he served as CEO/publisher at IDG’s InfoWorld Magazine, where he wrote a popular column. In the 2000s, he was a partner at venture capital firm Polaris Partners. Metcalfe is the recipient of a number of prizes, most recently the 2022 ACM A.M. Turing Award, and a fellow at a variety of organizations.
