W. Patrick McCray is a professor in the History Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is the author/editor of eight books, including README: A Bookish History of Computing from Giant Brains to Everything Machines (MIT, 2025) and the prizewinning 2013 book The Visioneers. This year, he holds the Kluge Chair in Technology and Society at the Library of Congress.
