Thomas S. Mullaney

Professor of Chinese History, Stanford University

Thomas S. Mullaney is a professor of Chinese history at Stanford University, a Guggenheim Fellow, and recipient of Stanford’s highest award for excellence in teaching, the Gores Award. He is the author or editor of eight books, including The Chinese Computer: A Global History of the Information Age (2024), Where Research Begins (2022, with Christopher Rea), The Chinese Typewriter: A History (2017), and Coming to Terms with the Nation: Ethnic Classification in Modern China (2010). His writings have appeared in Fast CompanyMIT Technology ReviewQuartz, the South China Morning PostTechCrunch, Technology & CultureForeign Affairs, and Foreign Policy. He holds a PhD from Columbia University.
