Position Summary

The Director of Philanthropy, Legacy and Major Gifts is responsible for the identification, cultivation and solicitation of major, annual, and planned gifts to benefit CHM. The primary goal will be to design and implement programs and prospect strategies to document future gifts to benefit CHM. Working in collaboration with the Vice President of Development, the CEO, programmatic VP’s, and the Board of Trustees, the position will focus on building a strong pipeline of relationships with current and new prospective donors who have affinity with CHM’s mission. This role is not bound by restrictive layers of authorization and permissions. Savvy facilitation of the vast resources available through CHM’s significant ties to Silicon Valley is required and central to the success of this position. The members of the Board of Directors of CHM are deeply tied to Silicon Valley and other technology centers around the country. Appropriately leveraging their knowledge and networks and facilitating their engagement in order to invite individuals to invest in the programmatic and operating needs of the museum is expected of the role. A strong comfort with the tech world, a natural curiosity, fearlessness and creativity in engaging individual donors are all important for success.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer (CDO), the position will join a talented team working across the Museum to build out the vision for CHM’s curatorial and programmatic work and continue its history of financial and operational excellence. The core role is to activate all the networks affiliated with the Museum to ensure that the financial resources to build upon that vision are available when they are needed. Specifically, the position will work independently, and as part of a fundraising team, to build upon an existing planned giving program, a central component of the ongoing $150M comprehensive campaign. Goals for the position include building the engagement of a broader and more diverse donor base of individuals capable of making gifts at the 6 and 7-figure level. Primary goals include identifying campaign prospects and building and facilitating strategies for cultivation and solicitation of planned and major gifts. This position will work closely with the CDO to establish the next phase of the planned giving program at CHM, consistent reporting, trustee involvement, and white glove experiences for our top campaign prospects.

Specific Duties

  • Become knowledgeable and conversant in all aspects of CHM’s mission, exhibitions, initiatives, programs, and long-range plans.
  • Craft and execute solicitation strategies for individual donors – write briefings and proposals, prepare correspondence, set meetings, make “the ask” (or prepare an appropriate solicitor), follow up all solicitations and steward the donation and the ongoing relationship.
  • Cultivate and maintain a personal fundraising portfolio of approximately 150 donor prospects with the capacity to give $100,000 or more.
  • Work with colleagues to create and implement a long-term stewardship plan involving written communications to donors, including specific reporting on outcomes achieved as a result of individual philanthropic support.
  • Building on past peer screenings, develop a process for identifying and tracking our current trustee network as it relates to planned giving prospects.
  • Assure data related to planned gifts is accurate and updated monthly.
  • Provide leadership for the Planned Giving Task Force.
  • Assure accuracy of the CHM prospect rating system.
  • Ensure the integrity of donor relationships and philanthropic agreements.
  • Assist with the implementation of strategic recognition and cultivation events Museum-wide.
  • Participate in opportunities to network with prospective and current donors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

Required Background, Experience, and Education

  • Substantial experience with multi-year, significant (9 figure) fundraising campaigns.
  • An understanding of the Silicon Valley philanthropic landscape; well-connected in that landscape is ideal.
  • Demonstrated success in identifying, cultivating and soliciting individual donors which resulted in a robust pipeline of new relationships and significant increases in funding.
  • Ability to identify and work with collaborators to develop sophisticated strategies for high-capacity donor prospects, locally and globally.
  • Significant experience working with fundraising platforms and reporting functions; experience with Salesforce is ideal.
  • Has a genuine interest and enthusiasm for all things techie-related.
  • Excellent relationship-building skills and agility to build rapport with internal and external stakeholders around innovative ideas and programs.
  • Comfortable with a start-up like culture, where multiple priorities and agendas evolve through collaboration and can emerge opportunistically.
  • Exceptional communication skills; articulate, with proven ability to write effectively and speak persuasively.
  • Extensive knowledge of planned giving instruments. • Superior organizational skills, with a strong sense of detail-orientation.
  • A Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree and/or CFRE preferred. • Genuinely enjoys engaging donors and the fundraising process.
  • Understands and embraces the Silicon Valley culture of innovation and risk.
  • Inspires confidence and trust; demonstrates an affinity with the interests of engineers and entrepreneurs.

Salary Range: $150k-$180k annually
